Amaryllis or Belladonna Lily




Amaryllis is a beautiful plant widely known as the Belladonna Lily or naked ladies. There is only one species of Amaryllis which originates from the South Africa. B

elladonna lily is recognized by narrow, flat leaves and flowers resembling the lily on separate, leafless stalks. This perennial plant grows in all parts of the globe, especially in flat lands of the tropics and subtropics.

Amaryllis is a bulbous plant. Its bulbs may reach 5-10 cm in diameter. The plant is recognized by several green leaves in the shape of strap.  Placing in two rows, their length is 30-50 cm; width is about.2-3 cm broad.

In cold countries the leaves appear in the autumn or early spring dieing down by late spring. The bulb is ‘asleep’ until late summer when it produces one or two naked stems with the height of 30-60 cm tall.

Each stem is topped by a cluster of two to twelve funnel-shaped  white, pink , purple flowers with diameter of 6-10 cm diameter. The flowers have six similar petals which may be divided into three outer sepals and three inner petals.
