Care for a Stargazer Lily

Stargazer LilyStargazer lilies are showy flowering plants, which are capable to beatify any landscape with their uncommon coloring. They are considered to be easy- to –grow plants blooming for 14-20 days and spreading sweet scent.

No doubt, these striking flowers will make your garden much brighter. Now I will share some tips on plant’s care. Hope they will be of great usage for you

•    Stargazer should be placed in such spot, where it gets about 6 hours of direct sunlight. In climates with too hot summer seasons the plant will thieve if receives morning sunlight and will be in shade during afternoon hours. Stargazer lily will endure partial shade, but its flowers may fade without proper sunshine.

•    Now it is time for soil preparation. It should have depth of 8 -10 in and be without any rocks or debris.  For preventing soggy soil use drainage. Do not forget to fertilize the soil as well.

•    Your stargazer lily should be planted in the early springtime. Dig a 6 -8 in- deep hole, mixing 1 ts. of bone meal into the soil.  Afterwards put there the bulbs, covering them with loose soil and packing by hands. To add a natural effect, make groups of 3-5 plants. Believe they will look gorgeously if not to plant them paired or in straight rows.

•     Once the bulbs are planted water them, keeping the soil moist until the emerging of first leaves. The soil should be watered once it is going to dry.

•     In springtime once new growth appears, feed the plant with fertilizers. Add fertilizers prior flowering as well; it is better to apply a high phosphorus fertilizer to ensure big bright flowers.

•    When the flowers will fade or start losing their petals, take off them. I would not advise you to cut back the stargazer after flowering. Just let the leaves go on growing.

•    When the foliage has become brownish, it is time to cut the plant back to the level of soil and cover it with 3- 4 in layer of old foliage for protecting the bulbs during the wintertime.
