Chrysanthemum is one among the perennial plants that are easy to grow. It is advisable to plant them in early spring. Being planted in full sunlight, the plant will grow best and form more blooms. One can find numerous kinds of Chrysanthemum and it is up to you what color of the plant, size and blooming time to choose.
• Planting Mums
Chrysanthemum can be got as seeds, cuttings, divisions, or even bedding plants. For preventing plant diseases and pest problems it is better not to grow the mums in the same spot for more than 3 years. Plant it into fertile and sandy soil into a deep hole. Make an 18-30 in space between the holes. You should fertilize the plants two times in a month. Once they are 6 in long, pinch nearly 3/4 of an inch from each branch to assure more flowers. Once they attain the height of 1 foot pinch them for the second time. On the biggest flowering form it is recommendable to take off all the buds with exception of the one borne atop.
• Divisions
Young divisions grow quicker, giving a better plant. Once the new shoots have the height of 1-3 in in early spring, dig up the old clumps, pulling them apart. Afterwards you should plant divisions into fertile soil, discarding the half dead woody parts.
• Seeds
The plant’s seeds are to be sown into the well prepared soil where they are to flower not less that 2 months before the first frosty day. You can also plant the seeds at home in early springtime and then to transplant. The temperature of the rooting medium should permanently be at 70-75 degrees. They can germinate within 1- 4 weeks.
