• The wild Hyacinth originates from Turkey and the Middle East, along the eastern shores of the Mediterranean.
• They were planted in Europe since the time of Greeks and Romans. The plant’s sweet odor was noticed by Homer and Virgil.
• Afterwards the Hyacinth withered from history, and was not so popular until the 16th century- the time of its reintroduction into Western Europe from Turkey and Iran.
• Beginning from the mid-16th century Hyacinth plants have been in cultivation for commercial purposes. In Europe they gained their popularity in the 18th and early 19th century.
• Today the major commercial suppliers of their bulbs are Netherlands and the UK. Beside of in the Netherlands Hyacinths are planted for cut flower market.
• The common garden Hyacinth is mainly cultivated in the Netherlands for the perfume production. But the majority of Hyacinth perfume is synthetic, based mostly upon phenylacetaldehyde.
• The World Hyacinth Day takes place in the 7th of March.
• In the Victorian language of flowers Hyacinth is a symbol of sport or play, while the blue-colored Hyacinth stands for sincerity.
