•    True Violets have been in cultivation by ancient Greeks sicne 500 BC or even earlier. Greeks and the Romans valued Violets for its herbal properties, made wine from them and sweetened food.

•    Using the flowers in love portions, the Ancient Greeks believed the Violets symbolized fertility and love. By the way people wearing a garland of violets above the heads credited they ensured warding off headaches and woozy spells.

•    Crossings of a lot of plants were made; these cultivars were called the ‘Quatre saisons’ violets.

•    The so-called ‘Russian Violet’ has been introduced in the late 19th century. A plenty of efforts in horticulture gave the rise to the Violets that are grown nowadays.

•    Violet blooms can be consumed; in medicines they serve as a laxative, and the flowers are glazed for decoration in jellies and other food items. However it is strictly forbidden to take the plants internally in large quantities.

•    African violets are mostly grown as houseplants. They bear flesh-like downy foliage and along with 5-petal blooms flowering in summertime.  This species are frequently distinguished by a distinct eye while true violets have big to small-sized leaves in the shape of heart. Sometimes the foliage is smooth; however it can be covered by tiny hairs as well.
