Flower Arrangement - the Do’s and the Don’ts

Flower ArrangementBeneath are given some do’s and don’ts you should follow while making your flower arrangement. I hope they will be of great usage for you.

DO’s
•    Prior making your floral arrangement, make up your mind where it will be placed. Thus you will not doubt if the complete piece should be long or wide, round and full.

•    Choose a container that will match the decor and theme of the arrangement.

•    Go for a vase that will be in the right proportion to the blooms. Usually the vase is to make up ½ or 1/3 the total flower arrangement (for instance, the stems in the length of 3 ft should be placed in a 12 - 18″ vase).

•    Long, oval vases are appropriate for arrangements incorporating line flowers, like Liatris gladiolus, snapdragons, Delphinium, and Bells of Ireland.

•    For mass and filler flowers it is better to take vase with a belly, e.g. gingers jars or urns. Among mass flowers are carnation, rose, lily, sunflower, daffodil, tulip, and chrysanthemum. Baby’s breath, statice, Queen Anne’s lace, waxflower, and Saponaria are filler flowers.

•    For preventing forming bubbles, cut the flower stems diagonally under the water. The diagonal cut gives a broader space for the flowers to drink.  To prevent bacteria forming, all leaves that are under the water should be taken off. The proper amount of flower preservative should be added to the water in vase.

•    The water should be changed once in a couple of days. Remember to cut the flower stems as well.

DON’Ts
•    Combining flowers that do not naturally blend well is not advisable. While choosing flowers take into consideration their texture and color. Thus, bold, lustrous tropical flower bird of paradise does not blend well with slender, ruffled sweet pea.

•    Long floral arrangements should be not used for dinner table centerpieces. Remember your guests want to see each other across the table!

•    Sunny and warm spots are not for the flowers to be placed in. Remember the drafts and heat may lead to water evaporating out of both flowers and the vase ; beside of the nosegay can wilt.
