Inhabitants of Shanghai are big flower enthusiasts, and with the forthcoming Chinese New Year flowers, which are not garden variety, are in great demand.
They say that Shanghai can be called the Paris of the East as there are multiple blooms around; all of them spread a strong fragrance of romance. Shanghai has long been the largest supplier of fresh flowering plants in China. At the moment there are nearly 50 flower markets across Shanghai.
According to the owner of Tao Flowers, Lu Gang almost everyone with the average salary of US$295 spends nearly 5-10 cent on flowers every month.
This year the gold wheat bouquet is preferred by many customers. In the Shanghainese dialect, the word ‘money’ is pronounced as “mi”; it is the same as rice. So some entrepreneurs have taken advantages of it and came up with the gold wheat bouquet.
Mr Lu says that gold wheat bouquet given to your friends or family members is credited to bring money to the receivers.
Among others being widely sold are Pussy-Willow, which stands for “keep the wealth in the family”; it can be paired by so-called “five generation fruit”, this bouquet is believed to guide to wealth and fertility. Other not less popular flowers are lilies, denoting a family living in harmony.
