Georgetown Loss of the Flower Shop

Roy and Mary Lou Burgoyne never thought that within five years of their retirement and release of their family flower business started in 1909, it will be closed. As the matter of fact the Burgoynes Greenhouse & Floral will be closed at the end of January, or even much earlier. The products are being liquidated and 3 employees of the shop have already stopped their work.

In October, 2004, the owners of 4-acre floral complex Roy and Mary Lou Burgoyne sold it to the International Greenhouse Company. International Greenhouse Company is engaged in selling greenhouses and their necessities, with a lot of business being done via Internet sales.

According to David George, the owner of the company, the greenhouse side of his business always flourished at the Georgetown location, while the floral side struggled, though he had expected to keep it. But since 2008 the floral business became not so as the sales decreased for 30%.  George explains the previous year there was no one month the shop made the same number of sales as in the year 2007.

Whole sales for the Burgoyne’s floral side were nearly $250,000, while the International Greenhouse Company got $10 million in sales in the year 2008. George confessed that they have never got a profit on the floral shop, losing $40,000 on the shop in 2008.

In august, 2008 IGC got the Earl Gaudio and Son building in Tilton; it displayed the greenhouse business operations to the new location with 30,000 square-feet of space, while in Georgetown it was just about 6,000 square-feet. Now the business is flourishing but unfortunately, Georgetown lost its flower shop.
