February Daphne

The botanical name of this flowering plant is Daphne mezereum var. album. February Daphne is one of the marvelous early flowering shrubs, which grows in woodlands of Europe and Siberia.

February Daphne can grow about 3-5 feet in length being equally in width. It is notable by pleasant smell spread by its blooms. The clustered flowers have the diameter of about 0.5 cm; they come in white colors.

In spite of its common name, the plant’s blooming time is in late March to early April. By the way, the flowers start blooming just prior the foliage occurs. Factually, the greenish young growth often begins showing before the shrub terminates flowering.

The species Daphne mezereum bears purple-pink blooms being followed by scarlet berries. As for Daphne mezereum var. album it produces white blooms that form yellowish fruits.

The fruit’s seeds are poisonous for animals.
