Hyacinth

Hyacinth represents the common name for nearly 30 flowering plants belonging to the genus Hyacinthus and family Liliaceae. These perennials grow in the Mediterranean region and Africa.

They are remarkable by pleasing fragrance and attractive springtime blooms in the shape of a bell, coming in cues of white, orange, yellow, pinkish, red, purple, lavender and blue. They are borne in tight clusters.

These spectacular plants have been in cultivation for commercial purpose since the middle of the 16th century. In Europe the flowers gained their immense popularity in 18th and early 19th centuries.

Nowadays its bulbs are widely planted for commercial goals in the Netherlands and the UK.  They are highly valued as stunning cut flowers. The World Hyacinth Day takes place in the 7th of March.

In the Victorian floral language the Hyacinth flower stands for sport or play, while the blue-colored Hyacinth is a symbol of sincerity.
