Job's Tears

The botanical name is Coix lacryma-jobi. It is also commonly known as David's Tears, Saint Mary's Tears, Tear Drops or Adlay. Originating from the tropical areas of Asia, the plant belongs to the family Poaceae ( the grass one).

It is a tall, wild grass producing nature's beads. The plant’s seed has a hole through it, looking like a bead. The name Job's Tears appeared with the reference to the plant’s droplet-like ‘beads’ and to the biblical man ‘Job’ who tolerated great sufferings.

The inhabitants of the Far East consume Job's tears. In Japan it makes tasty tea and an alcoholic drink as long as a coffee. The commercial usage is bead jewelry. The color of plant’s blooms are white, however they are usually in red, blue, green and yellow. Job's tears is also utilized for musical instruments ( e.g. shaker gourds).
