Nandina domestica is commonly known as Heavenly bamboo or Sacred bamboo (however it Is not a bamboo). It is a suckering shrub from the Barberry family. Its genus has the only one member
The bloom originates from eastern Asia, from the Himalaya east to Japan.
This evergreen shrub may reach up to 2 m in length bearing plenty of stems growing from the roots. Its leaves may grow from 50 to100 cm long.
In spring season the young leaves come in pink to red shades prior turning green. As for the old foliage it becomes red or purple prior falling.
The blooming time is in June. The white blossoms are formed in conical clusters held above the leaves. Nandina produces red berry with the diameter of 5-10 mm. The ripe fruit can be come across in late fall. The Nandina’s berries are poisonous having toxic nandenine.
