Ohelo

Having the botanical name of Vaccinium reticulatum, the plant got its common name Ohelo in Hawaii. Ohelo is the member of the Ericaceae family (cranberry family) and is also called blueberry.

Its varieties thieve on lava flows, cinder beds; they inhabit alpine and subalpine shrublands. The Volcanoes National Park and Halladale are the places where one can enjoy an abundance of Ohelo species.

Ohelo is a low-growing shrub producing berries. Its berries may be found in such colors as deep-red or yellow.

Hawaiians believed that the plant is sacred to the Goddess Pele. Prior consuming Ohelo’s berries they made offerings to Pele and threw several berries in the volcano pit.

Today people use Ohelo’s berries in cooking; they make jelly from them. The delicious berries may be one of the pie’s ingredients.
