The Quilled Sweet Coneflower (Rudbeckia subtomentosa) is a relative of the Black-Eyed Susan plant. It reaches the height of about 4-5 feet.
Rudbeckia produces pinwheel-like blooms with a brownish center and about 15- 20 sulfur yellowish ray florets. The flower’s width is nearly 2 in. The blooming time is in late summer season with the peak in the middle of August month.
On its lower part the upright plant bears the leaves split up into 3 segments. The leaves are notable by vanilla aroma, hence the plant’s name. The varieties grow from Wisconsin to Louisiana and are typically met in low, open meadows, close to streamside and along roadways.
