Strelitzia

Strelitzia represents a genus which includes four species having their origin from South Africa. The flower is called in honor of the Meckenburg-Strelitz that is the place where Queen Charlotte of England was born. The genus is familiar as ‘the bird of paradise flower’ referring to the blooms’ resemblance to this bird.

It is very popular to grow the flowers in gardens. It is very important to know that the digested parts of the blossom have the poisonous nature. When birds drink the nectar, petals open to cover their feet in pollen.

The flower is available at any season of the year in such colors as orange, blue, yellow and white. The cut plant may enjoy the vase life for one –two weeks. However it should be handled in a proper way.  It cannot bear cold and will not thieve at any temperature which is below 45 F.
