The botanical name of the plant is Magnolia tripetala. It grows across the woody areas of the mid-South to as far west as eastern Oklahoma. This tree thieves along cool, moist mountain streams and close to swamplands. In the wild habitat the plant is capable to reach the length and width of approximately 30 feet.
Magnolia tripetala bears a grassy, gray-colored bark and not so much branches. The major trunk gives rise to some quick- growing suckers. This variety is notable by approximately 2-foot long leaves with the diameter of 8 in. The leaves are formed at the terminals of the branches in a whorl. It possesses the display and texture of a banana, albeit. The bowl –like whitish blooms have the diameter of 10 in. They are formed of 6-12 tepals, having a strong scent.
The Umbrella Magnolia plant was brought to the gardens Mark Catesby from England.
