Winter Aconite

The botanical name of the plant is Eranthis hyemalis. Winter Aconite is referred to the family Ranunculaceae( buttercup one). Its species originated from Asia Minor and Europe.

It occurs almost overnight. It blooms in winter month of January, frequently along with snowdrops. It is notable by underground corm, from where the golden blossoms and leaves appear. The golden cup--like blooms are surrounded by bright greenish bracts resembling a collar around the flower.

The small bloom is composed by 6 petals and a lot of stamens and pistils located in the center. The perennial low-growing Eranthis produces round clumps in the length of 3-6“. Its deep-green foliage occurs after the flowers weaken. The tighten leaves is split up into some finger-like lobes. In summer the Winter Aconite is asleep with the leaves dying totally.

This attractive plant perfectly serves as rock gardening, bedding flower. It is also widely grown in woodland garden.
