Zygopetalum represents a genus of the family Orchidaceae ( the orchid one). It comprises about 14 species of flowering plants native to South America, with the majority species growing in Brazil.The plant got its name Zygopetalum from the Greek "zygon", meaning "yoked petal." It is related to the yoke-looking growth at the base of the lip resulted by the fusion of leaves.
The most species grow on the other plants, however there some that grow in soil. Zygopetalum produces glossy, strap-shaped foliage. Depending on the species the leaves may be oblong or elliptic-lanceolate, acute or acuminate.
The plants bear racemes inflorescence composed of just one-two or more flowers. It may reach up to 0.6 m long. The length is more than the leave’s one. Their spectacular bracts are as long as the ovary is. The plants gained their popularity for their fragrance and waxy flowers bearing a lot of blooms. The blossoms come in cues of green, purple, burgundy, and raspberry.
