Caring for Tulips

To get bright wonderful flowers in spring you can plant bulbs in the autumn. Tulips are the plants that ate not so difficult to grow and take care for. These flowering plants do not requite much water.

Just make a hole and put the tulip bulb into it. To receive the wonderful blooms follow some simple steps that are given beneath.

•    The tulips should be planted in a soil that is drained very well. Note the plant do not tolerate to stay in water as it can kill their roots. To ensure the soil is really drained add into it 2 lbs. of peat moss. In case you are going to plant your tulips in a clayish soil, mix it with sand.

•    The bulbs should be planted nearly 10-15 days prior to the 1st frost. In case they are planted very early in the season, they can die off during cold weather.

•    A hole for every bulb should be twice or three times bigger then the bulb’s diameter. The usual depth of a hole is nearly 6-8 in. Add fertilizers (you can sprinkle bone meal).

•    To prevent weeds, mulch over the bulb you have planted. Beside of it will ensure good drainage.
•    Once the flower petals start falling, the tulip’s stem should be cut at the stem. It will not allow the plant to produce seeds, thus it will not waste its energy.

•    When the leaves turn brownish and wither, they should be pruned back.

Additional suggestions

•    It is better to plant per 7 or more bulbs in a clump. The number of bulbs depends on the plant’s variety.

•    To get lasting color you can plant the bulbs blooming at various times during the spring season.

•    To ensure large and nice flowers, dig up the tulip, removing the new, tiny bulbs that have grown during the year. Afterwards carefully put the bigger bulb back into the soil.
