Christmas Bells - Blandfordia



Blandfordia represents a genus of flowering plants originating from the eastern Australia. The species have such common name as Christmas Bells with the reference to their blooms' shape and time they are in flower in Australia.

Being the only genus from the family Blandfordiaceae, it got its name after George Spencer Churchill, the Marquis of Blandford.

The genus includes 4 species that are B. grandiflora R.Br; B. nobilis Sm.; B. cunninghamii Lind.; and B. punicea Labill Sweet. The plants are capable to attain the height up to 18 in, bearing delicate and long leaves.

The blooming time takes place in the summer season, when Christmas Bells produces attractive blossoms in the shape of tube. They come in a vasr array of colors and cues.

Christmas Bells is valued for their long-lasting span as a cut flower. Cultivation of Blandfordia species for commercial purposes started about 10 years ago. Today the growers from eastern Australia are the only ones who supply internationally this dainty cut flower.
