Violet




The flower comes from the Mediterranean region. Its fragrance is so pleasant and sweet that oil from it is widely utilized in the perfume manufacture.

This outstanding plant is the member of the Violaceae family in various shades of blue, white, yellow and purple colors. It has a good number of common alternative names. Some of them are ‘Hearts Ease’, ‘Bird's Eye’, ’Bull weed, ‘Pink-eyed John’,  ‘Pink-of-my-Joan’,  ’Godfathers’, ‘Godmothers’, ‘Wild Pansy’, Love-lies-bleeding, ‘Love-in idleness’, ‘Love Idol’, ‘Cuddle Me,’ Call-me-to-you’, ‘Meet-me-in-the-entry’, Kit-run-in-the-fields’, and many others.

As the matter of fact, Viola’s species possess more than 200 common names; a lot of them are related to sex and love. The name of the flower come from the Greek ‘Vias’ , which means ‘wayside’.

The plant is also named ‘Flower of Modesty’ referring to the fact that it hides its blooms in the heart-like leaves. Violet may be called Our Lady's Modesty’. There is a belief that the flower started blossoming at the very moment Mary said to the Angel Gabriel, who had come to tell her she was to bear the Son of God.
