The flower is the representative of the Salicaceae family. In ancient Europe rods and branches of this plant have the name of ‘Rods of Life.’ The Mysteries of the Roman goddess, Libra, included initiating women into motherhood by ritual flogging them with the Rod of Life to bring fertility.
In such countries as Poland and the Ukraine people touch one another with pussy willows on Palm Sunday. This tradition has the name of ‘God's Wounds’ which is followed after remembrance of Jesus’ scourging.
The Pussy Willow has salicin that is a substance which is similar to the active agent in the majority of painkillers. Native North Americans got it from the plant’s bark and roots for a painkiller and anti-fever medication.
The flower is available from November till April. If cut it may last about one-two weeks.
Flowering branches represent a special line accent into a spring or oriental arrangements and Christmas designs. They are also attractive staying alone in a vase and may serve as a simple addition in a small design.
