Hyacinth Orchid

Dipodium punctatum originates from Australia. It is commonly called "hyacinth orchid" or "Christmas orchid", but these alternative names can be referred to other species as well.

D. punctatum has a brown stem; the flowering stem is the only part that appears above ground, reaching up to 100 cm long, bearing up to 50 flowers.  This perennial bears no leaves.

The blooming time for this plant takes place in summer; Hyacinth orchid produces pink-colored blooms with a lot of purple-red spots. The blooms are nearly 5 cm in diameter.

This terrestrial plant thrives in open eucalypt forest. The orchid looks like Dipodium variegatum but can be identified with no difference because it does not bear spots on the ovary and pedicel.
