Growing Camellias

Growing CamelliasIt is very important to plant camellias in the right way; being well- established they will delight you for a long time.  One can come across 10-12 species of this showy plant with the main species that are Camellia japonica, Camellia reticulata, and Camellia sasanqua.

These flowering plants are considered to be easy-growing ones. I would advise you to plant them on the north side of your garden on in the shady shelter of tall trees. For keeping soil cool in the heat of summer the routs should be covered with a 3-in- thick layer of bark mulch. Remember:

•    The plant thieves in shady places and can be burned in direct light of the sun. Do not place it nearer than 3 feet to a wall or surface, otherwise the can die off from reflected heat.

•    Apply some amendments to the soil, such as some sand and peat moss to the mix.

•    Do no let soil dry out totally or be over-watered. You are free to use a moisture meter to be always aware of the moisture level of the soil.

•    At least once a month add fertilizer for acid-preferring plants, after adding it water the soil.

•    Do not add any fertilizer once the buds of the bloom will start coloring. Once the flowering period finishes, start adding fertilizer again. Buds typically appear in early summertime and do not flower until the early or mid-winter.
