Growing Winter Cascading Flowers

Cascading FlowersCascading flowers are one of the great plants for giving color in hanging baskets, planters, urns and containers of any shape and size.

Cascading petunia, million bells, purple- or green-leafed lobelias, sweet alyssums and ageratums are such annuals that can be grown during the winter season as they tolerate low temperatures continuing to grow and blooms well into springtime.

Cupflowers, Aptenia, golden dyssodias, dwarf wormwoods and the silver-leafed, yellow yarrow are among best cascading perennials.

• In case you are going to plant cascading flowers in pots, it is advisable to angle them out over the edge of the container. Thus the stems will grow down over the sides of the pot.

• For winter planting, it is better to purchase plants in pots of small sizes. Cell packs include 6-8 plants per tray. The small root-ball size let place more plants in the pot. This crowding makes faster establishment and richer blooming.

• It is very essential to plant the flowers in a good soil. You are free to go for any potting soil, but do not forget to add perlite for improved drainage and aeration (mix 1 part perlite with 5 parts potting soil).

• There is no need to use drainage material in the bottom of the pot. It should be filled with soil mix. Leave 2-3 inches at the top for watering.

• While planting, slightly tease the roots along the margin of the root ball using a kitchen fork prior to fill around them with soil. Thus the roots will grow out into the potting soil.

• Once the cascading flowers are planted place them in a sunny spot. Heat will lead to root growth, increasing blooming during the wintertime. Beside of water the plants with slightly warm water for speeding up the rooting process.

• The soil should be kept moist but not wet.

• It is advisable during the cold months to use a water-soluble plant food with the nitrate form of nitrogen as it can be directly taken in by plants.
