Here are some useful tips for growing a healthy protea plant.
• It is recommendable to plant protea seeds is in autumn or spring as namely this time of the year has the difference between the day and night temperatures nearly 12 degrees C.
• For the protea to thrive, the seeds should be planted in a plastic seedling bag full of lightly acidic soil mixture -pH=5.5. You can get such mixture by mixing river sand, decomposed pine needles, and perlite in the ratio 2:2:1. To get rid of the fungus, eggs, and larvae that make harm to the plant’s seeds it is better to utilize boiling water and a fungicidal solution -Jeyes fluid.
• For the seeds’ germination without being ruined by fungal infections treat them with a smoke primer and a fungicide solution. It can take 1-3 months for the seeds to germinate.
• For watering do not use alkaline or salty water, it should be free of fungus as well. Watering protea plants in the evening is not recommended as it can cause fungal infections.
• While taking protea out of the bag in order to plant it outside, be careful with its roots, avoid disturbing them.
• Feed the young proteas with decomposed organic material -compost. Regularly feed protea with organic nutrients. Sometimes add a small number of ammonium sulphate to ensure that the soil stays acidic. Don’t water the plants in the evening in order to avoid fungal infections.
