The amaryllis plant originates from warmer climates. Its attractive funnel-like flowers are borne at the top of a single stalk stem. Sometimes the flowers’ weight will need some kind of support for the stem. A plain bamboo stake and raffia tie are good plant supporters, at the same time being a nice addition to the plant.
If you get amaryllis in bulb form, it is better to put it in a bright, warm spot. Once the buds emerge, and start coloring, displace the plant in a cooler room to extend its flowering period. Water it fairly.
Remember the soil should be kept moist but not soggy; the plant should not sit in water.
When amaryllis will stop blooming, it will need at least 4 hours of full sunlight. Thus its foliage will store solar energy to supply the next year’s flowers. The faded blossoms should be taken off, while the withered stems should be cut to their base.
Continue to take care for the plant and water it as long as it has foliage. Keep the bulb in dormancy in its pot in a cool and dry spot. Take off the top 1-2 in of soil and begin watering it when once it gives sprouts again.
