The Chestnut oak is botanically known as Quercus prinus belonging to the white oak group. It originates from the eastern America. Here it is valued as a ridge top tree.
Sometimes Chestnut oak can be named as "rock oak" referring to its mountainous and other rocky habitats. The average height of the tree is about 22m; however if it grows in perfect conditions the plant can attain the length of 40-43 m. For instance the Chestnut oak living about 10 years will get about 5 m tall.
The Chestnut oak is distinguished by its massively-ridged bark coming in deep gray to brown color. It produces compound leaves having from ten to fifteen lobs. Each leaf has the length of 12-20 cm and is 6-10 cm wide.
The Chestnut oak trees are considered to be not the best timber trees as their branches typically grow low and not so straight. However if the plant inhabits in best growth conditions, it is valued for timber. Its timber is traded as 'mixed white oak'.
