Dewberry

The Dewberries or Rubus sect. Eubatus represent a group of species with close relations to the blackberries. Dewberries can be found throughout the majority of the parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Some think of at as if it is weed, however the plant’s foliage can be made a tea from.

In March and April, the dewberry produces white-colored blooms developing into small green berries in late summer or early fall. The miniature green berries turn into red and then a dark purple-blue with their ripening. The ripe berries are too soft and no so difficult to gather without mashing them.

Unlike some other Rubus species, the dewberries lack canes; instead of they give rise to stems trailing along the ground; they put forth new roots across the whole stem’s length. The stems are typically coated by spines or stickers.

The dewberry is prized for its tasty berries that can be consumed raw, or used for making cobbler or jam.
