Jacobean Lily



This striking plant has the botanical name of Sprekelia formosissima. Originating from Mexico and Guatemala, it belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae. 

It is also commonly known as St James Lily and Aztec Lily. Thomas Jefferson grew this plant from bulbs mailed to him by the famous nursery-man Bernard McMahon from Philadelphia.

This bulbous plant produces red-colored blooms growing at the stem’s tips. The plants flowers a couple of times, its active blooming activity takes place in spring. The stem’s length is about 12 - 18 inch. The red blossoms look like amaryllis ones.  Jacobean Lily bears long, greenish upright leaves. The plant’s parts have nicotine; that is why it is believed to be poisonous and harmful flower.

This uncommon flowering plant makes perfect gardening, ornamental or outdoor container plant. Besides, Jacobean Lily has medicinal properties.
