Kangaroo Paw



The botanical name is Anigozanthos flavidus. Its botanical name anigozanthus came from the Greek word ‘anoigo’ that means ‘to open’ and ‘anthos’ that means ‘flower’ with the reference to the plant’s way to open widely from the bloom's base. 

Being the member of the family Haemodoraceae, the plant can be also commonly known as Green Kangaroo Paw or Mangles' Kangaroo Paw. There are more than 10 species native to the south-west of Western Australia.

This perennial is remarkable for incomparable bird attracting blooms. The tube-like flowers are covered with dense hairs.
On the 9th of November this uncommon flowering plant was declared to be Western Australia's floral emblem; it was included into the State Coat of Arms on 17 March 1969.

Today kangaroo paw plant makes perfect cut flowers; they are used in bouquets and floral arrangements.
