Oleander



Oleander represents the general name of 2 species of evergreen shrubs belonging to the genus Nerium. These plants are the members of family Apocynaceae( the dogbane one).

Oleander is an evergreen shrub that is also commonly known as Laurel Rosa, Flourier Rose, Olean, Aiwa, Rosa Francesca, Rosa and Rose-Bay.

This small tree is the inhabitant of Morocco and Portugal eastward. It also can be found in the Mediterranean region, southern Asia and southern areas of China. The plant is mostly seen around dry stream beds.

Having spreading branches, Oleander has the length of to 2-6 m. The leaves maybe paired or represent whorls of 3 thick and leathery, deep green, narrow lancelate, reaching up to 21 cm in length and up to 3.5 cm broad in width. They are not toothed.

 The branches are topped by Oleander’s white, lemon or pink-colored blooms growing in clusters. The five-petal blossoms have the diameter of 2.5-5 cm. Round the centre of the corolla tube there is a fringe. The plants have sweet smell. The fruit is borne in a 5-23 cm long capsule producing plenty of seeds.
